The howies t-shirt election

Written by Joe Holdcroft

Since Jamie and I went up to the lovely Cardigan in Wales to see the awesome clothing brand that is howies for the first time a few weeks ago we've been beavering away on a great little project. Jamie blogged about this earlier this month, and we've been teasing a bit on our twitter.

Well, we're pleased to announce that it's gone live and you can now enter the howies 2010 T-Shirt Election!

For this application, we wanted to experiment a little with some modern technologies, so we used some of the information I picked up from Jeremy Keith's workshop HTML5 for Web Designers in April. For instance, we used the new DOCTYPE declaration and shortened meta, link and script tags.

We also used the new email input type for forms, which you only really notice if you're using Safari on an Apple touchscreen device, where tapping in an email type input box gives you an email-specific keyboard rather than a bog-standard one. It's a really nice touch that degrades gracefully and is very easy to implement.

This was the first client project we have released that doesn't fully support IE6, too. We built the app using semantic and valid markup so we simply strip away the CSS and Javascript for IE6 users and present them with a fully-functioning page, but without the nice styling and interactivity. Everyone can use this app in one way or another, even if they are using a browser which is 10 years out of date.

These are some of the practices that we are hoping to be using more and more over the coming months for more projects... so watch this space!

We're really excited to be working with howies and hope everyone loves the T-Shirt Election app as much as we do!

Turns out the app runs perfectly on iPad Safari too, which is great :-)
